What a build sheet is
A build sheet is the factory record of a car's original specification. It's linked to the car's VIN (vehicle identification number), the unique 17-character code every modern car has. A build sheet typically shows:
- Make, model, trim level and body style
- Engine, power, fuel type and gearbox
- Exterior paint colour and paint code
- Interior trim and upholstery
- Factory-fitted options and packs (a panoramic roof, heated seats, upgraded audio, driver assistance packs or a tow bar)
- Production date
What's in your AnalyzeMyCar build sheet
Our build sheet is organised into two parts:
Equipment Packages - the factory option packs fitted to the car, the features included in each, and an estimated price for every pack - so you can see exactly what was specced and what it's worth.
Performance & Fuel Economy - the car's performance figures and official fuel-consumption data (NEDC and WLTP), straight from the factory specification.
Why it matters when buying a used car
Check the advert is honest - sellers sometimes describe a car as a higher trim or claim options it doesn't have, often by mistake. A build sheet shows what was actually fitted.
Pay the right price - trim level and options affect value. A sports pack, a bigger engine or premium audio can change the price noticeably - and a valuation is only accurate if it's based on the right spec.
Spot changes since it left the factory - if the car is a different colour from its paint code, or has wheels or parts that don't match the original spec, ask why. It could be a simple upgrade, or a sign of accident repair.
Find the right parts - garages and parts suppliers often need the exact spec to order the correct brake pads, filters or trim pieces.
How to read it: three quick checks
- Does the trim level match the advert?
- Are the options the seller mentions on the list?
- Does the paint colour match the car in front of you?
If any answer is no, ask

Our Build Sheet + Valuation report shows the car's factory specification and a market valuation for that exact spec - the right trim and options, adjusted for the car's mileage and condition. You can check the advert against the facts and know whether the asking price is fair before you view. See how the numbers work in How Vehicle Valuation Works, and for the viewing itself, use our used car buying checklist.
